Scott Lancey (yes, he does have a last name) was born in New England in December, 1955 and grew up in New York. He graduated in 1977 from Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York with a B.S. in Television/Radio Communications. Scott's career in broadcasting spanned twenty-eight years with several radio stations in New York, Maine and Virginia. How he came to launching Mid-Atlantic WX.com is a story best told in the first person.

“When I was a kid, I was going to be either a Meteorologist or a ‘famous’ radio DJ. Upon realizing a career in meteorology required extensive math skills, I thought working on radio, going backstage at concerts and getting free albums would be more fun. I never lost my love of science and continued a lifelong fascination with weather analysis and, in particular, hurricanes and tornadoes. I lived a curious life; I was a volunteer fireman, worked on an ambulance, was an EMT and a Red Cross First Aid Instructor. Back then, those were odd hobbies for someone who was a rock and roll radio DJ. I met fascinating people like Ronnie Van Zandt and Lynyrd Skynyrd, Ozzy, The Who, Van Halen, Rick Springfield, Jethro Tull, Heart, EL&P, Charlie Daniels, The Marshall Tucker Band, Styx, Journey and many more. All the while I kept reading about weather and dodging waves during storms.

With time, the radio station “suits” had me report and provide analysis of weather events. In Portland, Maine, I was on-air during "The Perfect Storm", Gloria, Bob, the Floods of 1987 and several Nor'easters. Upon moving to Virginia, I worked on-air during Fran, Dennis, Floyd and Isabel. A friend of mine sent in a recording of me doing a winter storm update while at WREL Radio in Lexington, Virginia: don't know the date but it was early in the morning and I'm horrified by how serious I was (insufficient coffee)! Click here if you care to listen.

More recently, I was honored to be asked for several on-air interviews in Louisiana and Alabama as hurricane Katrina approached the Gulf Coast. I probably am best known among the Internet weather community for producing hurricane model maps and commentary. It is humbling to know how important this information is to those in harm's way. I'm intensely passionate about hurricane forecasting and proud of our track record here at Mid-Atlantic WX.com.

In 2004, the radio headphones were hung up and I received a professional commission with the Boy Scouts of America. I don’t party with rock stars anymore but do get to meet hundreds of great kids and volunteers in my work with the BSA. I am extremely proud of this organization, what it stands for and how it makes a difference in the lives of so many youth.

Mid-Atlantic WX.com was launched in the summer of 2004 while the model maps are available by subscription. It is still an amazement to me the site receives nearly one million visits a year and remains the only commercial weather web site I know that is ad free.

I'm often asked if I have a page on MySpace and the answer is no. Too busy for that and can’t imagine why anyone would go to the page. But I’ll cover some of that stuff here: I’ve been an NWS Skywarn Spotter for years, am a lifelong New York Yankees fan (prohibit Red Sox hats in my home), follow the Dallas Cowboys, love hockey, am a Civil War nut, listen to Bruce Springsteen most every day, detest winter (it's just a lull between hurricane and tornado seasons) and still try to chase storms and tornadoes.”

Note to New York Yankee haters: be discrete! Scott has been known to quickly write back using language he learned in Da Bronx!
